I Love City Life

img848.jpgJust as the acclaimed off-Broadway show prepares to make its Broadway opening, I too, will be making a debut In the Heights.

My sojourn as a Manhattan tenant won’t officially begin until I move my bed in next week, but the signs are all there that I’m headed for another adventure. If the past week is any indication, I predict that living in NYC will be far from dull.

Things got off to an interesting start, when I managed to lose my wallet while en-route to deliver my first rent check to my new roommates. “Hi, I’m here to give you the check, but can I quickly use your computer to find my bank’s 1-800 number so I can cancel my ATM and credit cards first?”

Someone is watching out for me, though, because the roomies were cool about my wallet crisis, and then it turned out not to be a crisis after all — because a darling Romanian woman, out walking her blind dog along Broadway near Lincoln Center, was kind enough to retrieve it from the sidewalk where busy folks were just passing it by. Ana speaks no English, so her daughter called later that night with the good news. When I went to pick up the wallet, I brought some bright yellow freesia and a pink gerber daisy, and greeted her with a super huge thank-you hug. A pretty uplifting way to begin my life as a resident of NYC!

  • I LOVE that musical!!!! I saw it last spring with my boyfriend of the time. He went to Wesleyan and knew Lin from theater and had seen the beginnings of this show back in the day. Such a refreshing mix of Latin and hip-hop. I hope it does well on Broadway!

As for the wallet, after my last visit to NYC, I must say New Yorkers are friendlier than ever these days.

  • Good to hear a positive review…I’m looking forward to seeing it sometime this spring or summer.

  • Hi, found your page through your Couchsurfing piece written for Transitions Abroad. I’m a huge fan of both and wanted to say hello and welcome to the city!!
