Picture Books About Place and Travel
We’re having a children’s event at the bookstore tomorrow for a beautifully designed picture book called Building Manhattan. Pratt graduate Laura Vila** wrote and illustrated this wonderful visual history of Manhattan that celebrates its beginnings as “…an island of natural beauty with diverse wildlife, to its contemporary diversity of cultures and architecture.”
“It grew and it grew and people still come.
The building of Manhattan is never done.”
You can view the entire book online page-by-page. But…why not flip through the real thing? If you live in NYC and have kiddies (or even if you don’t) consider stopping by the store Wednesday afternoon, July 23 at 3 pm to partake in the storytelling fun!
I always find myself particularly drawn to kids books that are: a) visually appealing in their color and design; and b) instill a sense of place and/or encourage exploration or discovery. Two more recently released picture books that I love are How I Learned Geography and All Aboard! A Traveling Alphabet. And I’m a fan of these two older titles that I wrote about previously: Uncommon Traveler and Adventures of the Treasure Fleet.
Do you have a favorite place or travel-inspired picture book to share?
**Just a note: This is the first book Laura Vila has published from her Little People Literature collection. There are more books to come, and I can’t wait. For example — How fun, to imagine, what do rainbowworms catch?

Adele & Simon? It’s travel on a micro-scale, watching them find their way through Paris. (And apparently through (some part of?) the US in the next book – really looking forward to that one!)
I’ve heard of this duo, but have not read the book, so thanks for the tip!
It is great getting ideas for picture books for you. We have a few of them in the school’s collection already- thanks to you. Today I am going to check out the alphabet book- it looks like fun. I love your tips!
Thanks…but some of these books I actually learned about while visiting your library :)
