For now, books are still the best way of taking great art and its consolations along with us on the bus. – Francine Prose

As the daughter of an English teacher and children’s librarian, I was truly reared as a reader. I used to keep an index card file of every book I read, and would write a short summary of the book, followed by a one-word review: “Great” “Awesome” “Mysterious!” Each book then received either a happy or sad smiley face, or a star if it was superb. (Nancy Drew always got stars, of course.)

I’ve only recently started keeping track of what I read again, and have decided on Good Reads as the place where I will collect everything. My online library houses several dynamic bookshelves listing what I’ve read and would like to read. The latter group is unrealistic, at 249 books and growing, but I like to keep tabs on titles that interest me, regardless of whether or not I get around to reading them.
